What’s the difference between disabled and ambulant bathrooms?

We live in a world that’s built for able bodied people. If you have full functions over every aspect of your body you don’t need to think about things like how you’re going to get into a building without ramps or if there’s an accessible bathroom available for use.

Luckily making the world more accessible for less able bodied people is now a consideration and even a regulation in many parts of the world, including Australia. Many of us are familiar with men’s and women’s bathroom signs and disabled signs are pretty self explanatory, but what are ambulant toilets and what’s the difference between an ambulant bathroom and a disabled bathroom?

What are disabled or accessible toilets?

Disabled or accessible toilets have been specifically designed for people who require enough space within a bathroom to transfer from a wheelchair or motorised scooter to the toilet. Accessible toilets typically include additional accessibility features such as grab rails, lower mirrors and sinks and enough room for a wheelchair and a helper or assistant to move freely within the toilet.

What are ambulant toilets?

Ambulant toilets have been designed for people with disabilities that don’t require the room needed to move a wheelchair in and out of the bathroom. Ambulant toilets are designed for people that use walkers, walking frames or are on crutches.

LooCube provides both disabled and ambulant bathroom buildings so no matter your requirements, we have a modular bathroom building that will suit your needs.
